How many Small Businesses are there in Canada?

Industry Canada’s definition of “small business” is firms that have fewer than 100 employees. 

The definition of a small business varies across the world. For comparison, in the European Union, any business that has fewer than 50 employees is considered a small business. In Australia, companies with fewer than 15 employees are considered small businesses.

Small business stats show that most businesses in Canada have fewer than 100 employees.

As of December 2020, there were 1.22 million employer businesses in Canada. Of these, 1.2 million (97.9 percent) were small businesses, 22,725 (1.9 percent) were medium-sized businesses and 2,936 (0.2 percent) were large businesses.

How many jobs are created by Small Businesses in Canada?

With so many small businesses in Canada, it’d be no surprise that small businesses generate the majority of jobs there. But the distribution of the number of people employed according to business size varies considerably between the private sector and the public sector. 

In 2020, 88.3 percent of employed individuals in the private sector worked for Small Businesses, compared with 76.0 percent of those employed by public organizations of the same size.

Main reasons for opening your own business?

There are different motivations why people enter small business ownership. According to Guidant Financial 2021, 29% of the surveyed people opened their own businesses because they wanted to be their own boss. Other popular reasons were their dissatisfaction with American corporations wanting to pursue one’s own passions, a presented opportunity, feeling inspired, or simply not feeling ready to retire.

Do male-owned businesses have higher survival rates? 

Yes, they do. According to the Key Small Business Statistics, most of the male-owned businesses showed slightly higher survival rates than the majority of female-owned businesses after thirteen years of their creation. However, businesses owned equally by males and females had the highest survival rates over the period observed. 

 

 

Are new generations more entrepreneurial?

Gen Z are those borned between 1997 and 2010. They succeeds millennials, and while they are pretty similar in some ways their approach to business and entrepreneurship is very different.

Gen Z is rapidly becoming known as the most entrepreneurial generation ever. According to a recent survey conducted by EY Ripples and JA Worldwide of 6,000 active and former JA Worldwide participants born between 1997 and 2007, 53% hope to run their own business within the next ten years. That proportion increases to 65% for those who have already entered the workforce.

 

What is the survival rate for small business?

Over the first three years, small businesses in Canada focused in the goods-producing and services-producing sectors show similar survival rates. After the third year, survival rate in the goods-producing sectors is higher than in services-producing.

Past the first ten years, according to the Key Small Business Statistics, the business survival rate is still higher in goods-producing with a 49.6 percent, compared with 44.6. And after seventeen years, the data continue to benefit the businesses operating in goods-producing sector 33.5 percent of them were still active compared with the 28.0 percent of business in the services-producing sector.
